3. Add a layer of gravel for drainage 3-4 in. deep

4. Lay the first course (row)
   • Lay your first ring of blocks (or desired shape) directly on the compacted gravel.
   • Use a level to ensure they are flat and even.
   • Stagger seams between courses for strength (like laying bricks).
5. Continue stacking the walls (usually 3-4 courses for 12-18 in. height)
   • For dry-stacked designs, push each layer slightly inward or keep straight - either works.
   • Tap pieces gently with a rubber mallet to seat them.
   • If you want extra stability, use high-temp mortar between courses. Follow the mortar mixing and curing instructions and allow proper drying time.
6. Add an inner hearth
   • Place a metal fire ring or a layer of fire brings inside the wall.
   • If you don't use a metal ring, set fire-rated bricks flush across the base.
7. Finish the top
   • Cap the wall with flat coping stones or bullnose pavers for a comfortable seating edge and a finished look. Mortar the caps if you want them permanently fixed.
8. Backfill & grade
   • Backfill around the outside of the wall with soil or small gravel to secure the outer course. Grade the surrounding area so water doesn't run into the pit.
9. Before your first fire, give everything time to settle and ensure all materials are secure. 
   • If you used mortar, let it cure per manufacturer instructions.
   • Remove dust and debris from the interior an add a 1-2 in layer of lava rock or small crushed stone to the base to improve airflow.
